The Fashion Spot Responds to Barack Obama’s New ‘Men's Vogue’ Cover

Rarely do we spend time thinking about men's mags except to peruse their models. And Men's Vogue's October cover boy sure did catch our eye: Barack Obama, shot by Annie Leibovitz. This is his second Mogue cover, having first been shot by Leibovitz for the mag in 2006. Vogue covers are often subject to ruthless criticism, and commenters on the Fashion Spot are already sinking their claws into this one. Their discussion began in superficial territory.

Miss Dalloway writes:

Hahah is he becoming the "Nicole Kidman" of Men's Vogue?

To be honest i dont remember his first cover at all :s and dont think this is a falttering angle.

bluedolphin writes:

Obama looks like a hollywood star , cheap, don't like the cover

Vogue28 simply states:

I don't like this cover

Then MyNameIs veers into political territory:

WTF? Didn't he just have a cover like 2 months ago? Talk about working overtime for hinm Vogue. They're probably on his campaign payroll or something.

To which Luxx replies:

Let's wait a minute. Obama had a Men's Vogue cover in 2006.

That was over two years ago. Men's Vogue has frequently given face time to other politicians - John Edwards had a cover as well, it's not rare for men's magazines to feature political mainstays as well as actors / journalists / athletes. Two covers is in the span of two years is nothing compared to the amount of time their sister publication devotes to their repetitious roster of favored actresses.

As for the political leanings of Conde Nast as a corporate entity that verges into debate that is almost too big for tFS.

The key word there is "almost." The discussion may have ended after that thread as of mid-morning, bless their hearts, but they still went there.

Lady Gaga

Mariel Concepcion, N.Y.
Lady Gaga may have gotten her name from the Queen song "Radio Gaga," but just two years ago, the 22-year-old singer wasn't receiving the royal treatment.

"I was signed to Def Jam when I was 19 years old. It was this whole romantic story: L.A. Reid heard me singing down the hallway from his office, and he said that I was a star and signed me right then and there," said the musically trained artist of her original major label deal. "But after he signed me, he never met with me. I used to wait outside his office for hours, hoping he'd take meetings with me about my songs, but it never happened. He eventually dropped me after three months. I was pretty devastated. I know what it's like being on a label when they don't quite get it."

But she didn't let premature disappointment overthrow her. Gaga, who had been writing music since the age of 13 and performing in her native New York since 14, started performing local shows and building her fan base, eventually sparking the interest of Interscope's Jimmy Iovine early last year. He offered her a label deal via Streamline/Interscope and partnered her with singer/songwriter Akon, who later hired Gaga as a songwriter.

"When we were working, Akon would say, 'Get in the booth and cut these vocals,' and he'd always tell me I could really sing. So he decided he wanted to be a part of my music," Gaga said about working with Akon, who ultimately convinced Jimmy to sign her to a joint deal with Konlive. "He spoke to Jimmy, and we decided to become a big family."

Now, Gaga is prepping the October 7th release of her debut album, "The Fame." "I marry a lot of different genres, from Def Leppard drums and handclaps to metal drums on urban tracks," said Gaga about the project. "It's very 70's, with early 80's Prince-like guitars and 80's synths. It's a bit retro, a bit glamorous, and you can dance to it. It's very futuristic, very fresh, and very dramatic, sort of like theatrical pop."

Red One and Akon are among the producers, while Gaga takes all writing credit on the set. There are no guest features thus far.

The album's first single, "Just Dance," featuring Colby O'Donis, is currently No. 1 on the Canadian Hot 100. A second single hasn't been chosen yet, but potential tracks include the metaphorical "Paparazzi," the Red One-produced "Poker Face," the Swedish pop record "AA," and "Beautiful Dirty Rich."

Gaga is currently on a promotional tour and wrapping up "The Fame Part I," a short film compilation in the format of a musical mixtape. She also manages House of Gaga, her production team.

Today, Gaga has reclaimed her throne. "God has a plan for everyone. What happened to me just made me stronger and made me write the greatest pop record ever," she said. "Now, my goal as an artist is to write and make pop music that has something artistic and interesting to say. If I can get a four-year-old girl and a twenty-five-year-old art student to appreciate my album, then I've done a good job."

Solange Steps Out On Sophomore Solo Disc

Photobucket

September 05, 2008
It's no twist of fate that the opener on Solange's sophomore album, "Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams" (Aug. 26, Music World/Geffen), is a track titled "God Given Name," on which the 22-year-old artist reminds fans and skeptics alike that she's her own woman.

"I'm not her and never will be/Two girls gone in different directions, striving towards the same galaxy/Let my star light shine on its own/No, I'm no sister, I'm just my God-given name," Solange sings about being compared to her superstar sibling Beyoncé.

But she's quick to set the record straight: This album isn't any more about Beyoncé than it is "about your mom, auntie or cousin. I'm very good at saying that's not what this project is about. The idea of me being compared to my sister has been addressed before. Fans don't want to hear the same thing and I definitely don't want to answer the same thing."

"Solange wasn't concerned with being perfect on this album," manager/father Mathew Knowles told Billboard earlier this year. "Beyoncé's already got pop and she's perfect at it. Solange just wanted to sing from the heart. She wants her feelings and emotions to touch you. That's why 'God Given Name' was purposely the first song—so she can share with you how different she is."

With the help of producers the Neptunes, Jack Splash, Q-Tip and Mark Ronson, Solange created a sound on "Sol-Angel" that is less pop and more of a "marriage of '60s and '70s music with subtle hints of electronic," unlike her pop-driven 2002 Music World/Columbia debut, "Solo Star." That album reached No. 23 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and has sold 112,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"I knew what I wanted then, I just didn't know how to execute it," Solange says about her debut. "I was 15; I loved reggae, soul, alternative, R&B and hip-hop. And although I knew I had those tastes, the album became one with no identity. The songs were good independently, but as a collection it wasn't a body of work."

Topically, it's Solange's frank approach that drives the album. "Sol-Angel" is bursting with honest, real-life-driven tracks like breakup song "Valentine's Day," the Bilal-penned "Cosmic Journey" and the regretful "T.O.N.Y.," about a one-night stand. The Neptunes-produced lead single "I Decided" is a lighthearted love song that has shifted 38,000 combined physical and digital copies in the United States. The second single will be "Sandcastle Disco," whose clip was helmed by Solange in her directorial debut.

Solange's self-assured mind-set is what initially attracted Geffen president Ron Fair to the blooming artist. "Solange is a complete, free-spirited, unique, fabulous, fascinating artist who can sing her ass off," says Fair, who signed her last year. "She's her own person who can succeed on her own terms. She's gracious and she has a vision, and we're backing it."

Solange will continue to pen songs for her sister and former Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams; Solange wrote Williams' latest single, the Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart-topping "We Break the Dawn," and is hoping to further expand her reach into other genres.

"I really hope that I achieve what my definition of success is," Solange says. "I'm going to continue to make music. I will definitely do things on my own terms and standards. I want to be at a level where this feels totally organic and it feels fun and enjoyable and it doesn't feel like a job. If that's the case, then I would've just gone to college and gotten me a nine-to-five."
